Working In Consulting With A Non-Ivy Liberal Arts Degree

Working In Consulting With A Non-Ivy Liberal Arts DegreeWorking In Consulting With A Non-Ivy Liberal Arts DegreeCollege LifeKnow Your StrengthsBy the time I graduated, I knew I was well prepared to conquer the business world, even though I never took a class on finance or organizational development or economics. My confidence came from knowing I developed solid writing and speaking skills, critical thinking, research abilities, and application know-how. I knew learning Japanese language and culture would be important today, I am living in Tokyo and working on a global project. I knew Shakespeare and Milton would be useful in my life - I often quote from their great works to bring my points across to clients. I knew my research papers meant more than the basic thesis. From my first job, I was able to look at a problem broadly, extrapolate significance from simplicity or complexity, and offer and apply practical solutions for my clients. Think about how your math major or South Americ an studies minor can benefit you in the larger world. Think about how writing a thesis on the history of child slavery or an anthropological study on Samoan fisherman can contribute to your attractiveness as a well-rounded candidate. The consulting industry values diverse approaches and solutions, so market yourself and your distinguishing skills.Recognize your ChoicesOf course I struggled after graduation, but many of my difficulties resulted from the lessons I chose not to learn in school, not where I went to school. Although the school offered opportunities to learn these lessons, I chose not to take advantage of these resources. For example, Mount Holyoke, part of a five college consortium, allows students to cross-register at these other institutions for full credit. Had I taken more classes at the co-ed campuses, I might have better understood my male counterparts right from the start. Or had I done more internships, I might have had felt more comfortable with office politics. I struggled in these areas because I chose not to deal with them in school. Try to anticipate the struggles that may await you and learn to cope with them in your safe, school environment. The experience, insight, and preparation I gained from my small liberal arts college continues to be valuable to me today. In fact, despite the expensive tuition, I learned more than can be reflected in the expensive tuition. Know what you want to gain from school and take it. Recognize what your school lacks and work with the administration to compensate for it. Use your time in school wisely and ensure yourself an experience you will not regret.Post College LifeStart with Your SchoolGenerally speaking, colleges count on alumnae for monetary gifts and for the powerful recruiting its alumnae contribute - after all, the college can validly claim that the alumnaes success resulted partially from their alma mater. So colleges offer their students and alumnae a number of services for career developmen t and advancement. Take advantage of it, regardless of your situation - looking for that first job or internship, transitioning between careers, job searching within the same field, or returning to the work force after a significant break. NetworkingIn many ways, Mount Holyoke offers me more as an alumna than it did as a student. The women who graduated from Mount Holyoke represent a highly successful and driven bevlkerung who continue to support each other, regardless of whether or not we know each other. Graduating from Mount Holyoke is like graduating from a big sorority, in that sense. For me, my alumnae network becomes increasingly important, as I understand better each year the power the network offers. This is why I constantly urge readers to network. Through networking, you can enhance your career and career goalsLearn about available jobsGet the inside scoop about careersCreate joint venturesFind resources for your projectsMeet people you would not meet by yourselfFind ment orsIf you belong to a fraternity or sorority, start there. Many schools offer alumnae clubs, and some have alumnae offices as part of the college administration. Or try going through your schools endowment chairs, who undoubtedly know how to reach fellow alumnae. Look through your company directories - many organizations list your colleagues educational backgrounds. Also, find your alumnae on the Internet - conduct a general search or go through networking web sites (Vault has one, but there are dozens of others dedicated just to connecting you with alumnae).Give Back to your School and Be ProudIf your school lacks resources - a career development director, a strong alumnae network in your city, student internships, whatever it might be, volunteer. Help find a career development director or volunteer to serve part time. Create an alumnae club in your city or volunteer to represent your industry for students and alumnae seeking informational interviews. Offer an internship on behalf of your company. Even after you graduate, you will benefit in proportion to the effort you invest. You selected your school for various reasons - affordability, legacy, alumnae force, name, expertise in a field, etc. Regardless of why you chose your school, remember you got out of it what you wanted and can continue to gain value from it. I consider myself a successful businesswoman, despite my non-Ivy liberal arts degree, and I am proud to have graduated from Mount Holyoke. I encourage you also be proud of your school. The more pride you espouse, the more you encourage others to be proud of your school too. And the more pride the alumnae have for their schools, the greater the power of the degree you earned.

ASME and Nuclear Regulatory Commission to Offer Pump Valve S...

ASME and Nuclear Regulatory Commission to Offer Pump Valve S... ASME and Nuclear Regulatory Commission to Offer Pump Valve S... ASME and Nuclear Regulatory Commission to Offer Pump & Valve Symposium in July April 21, 2017 Registration is now open for the 13th Pump Valve Symposium - an event that is widely regarded as the premier conference on nuclear power plant inservice testing. The symposium, which is co-sponsored by ASME and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), will be held from July 16 to 19 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Washington D.C. ? Silver Spring in Silver Spring, Md. The four-day event will explore the latest issues, technology, developments and trends in preservice and inservice testing (IST) of nuclear power plants. The symposium will feature the fields leading experts - including prominent officials from the NRC and ASME code leaders - addressing a wide range of topics including NRC rulemaking, general ASME Operations and Maintenance Code (OM) scope, content and philosophy, and the pumps, valves, motor-operated valves (MOVs), air-operated valves (AOVs), snubbers, and risk insight activities that are vital to the safe and reliable operation and maintenance of nuclear power plants. One highlight of the Pump Valve Symposium is sure to be the keynote presentation, which will be given by Mary Jane Ross-Lee, acting Director for the Division of Operating Reactor Licensing in the NRCs Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation. Since joining the NRC in 1997, Ross-Lee has served in a number of areas within the agency including the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, the Office of New Reactors, and the Office of Administration (ADM). Appointed to the commissions Senior Executive Service in 2011, Ross-Lee currently serves as the Deputy Director for Division of Engineering. Mary Jane Ross-Lee will be the keynote presenter at the ASME/NRC Pump & Valve Symposium in July. Other speakers at the symposium will include representatives from ASME and the NRC as well as such companies and organizations as Westinghouse, NuScale, Exelon Nuclear, Entergy, Flowserve Corp., Anvil EPS, Kalsi Engineering, Curtiss Wright, Tecnatom, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Electric Power Research Institute, Sandia National Laboratories, the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS), the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, and China Nuclear Power Design. The symposium will also feature an open panel session at the end of the meeting where NRC and ASME OM Code leaders will review highlights from the four-day event and field questions from audience members. Robert Wolfgang of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, who is co-chairing the symposium with Robert Parry from NextEra Energy, said the event provides an excellent opportunity for young IST engineers to gain valuable insight into the inservice testing of pumps, valves, and snubbers, and for the industry to discuss OM Code decisions and determinations with the individuals responsible for the Code changes. It also offers IST engineers the chance to meet and talk to NRC staff who are involved with inservice testing, he said. 9 Tips from People Who Made Dramatic Career Changes

9 Tips from People Who Made Dramatic Career Changes 9 Tips from People Who Made Dramatic Career Changes It is estimated that 40 percent of current US employees are disengaged at work. Are you one of them? Some don’t like the company or their boss , but other times the frustrations run a lot deeper - maybe you realize your career doesn’t give you satisfaction, let alone a sense of purpose or happiness. So how do you know what you should be doing instead? And even if you do know, how do you get there? This is why I founded Repurpose Your Purpose : to help people who feel stuck change their careers . Recently, I invited Anthony Barcelo, VFX (Visual Effects) Supervisor and Senior Compositor for TV, commercials and  feature films;  Darren Marble, CEO of CrowdfundX (CfX); Ronnie Mok, Sr. Technical Program Manager of Product Design at Hulu; and Nicki Klein,  Co-Founder and CEO of Betagig, to join me on a panel discussion on their successes and failures in changing careers at WeWork Constellation in Century City. These are some of my favorite lessons from our talk: There’s a persistent myth that you can just read a book, do some self-help exercises, choose a career and voil! You can go out and find “the one.” Don’t buy into this narrative. Every one of my panelists changed careers at least once before landing at their current gig. Some changed multiple times. Barcelo, for example, didn’t think of visual effects as  his ideal  career right away. It grew on him organically until it became his career, and a very successful one at that! Too often we have a feeling something is not working in our career, but we keep waiting for the perfect opportunity to show up before we do something about it. We want to know what to do next, and we want to see a safe path to it. And so we wait, day after day, for that “aha” moment when we finally just figure it all out. It may be disappointing to hear, but you probably won’t know what to do and how to be successful at it until you do it. Most likely, you will have to follow that hunch that you should be doing something else and then try to do something different, fail, pivot and try again until you find your calling. You might not experience an epiphany before quitting your current job, but when you finally find the right career , you will know for sure. Mok used to work as a designer supporting marketing in an agency setting. And she couldn’t shake the feeling that her career, and all that she was creating, were disposable. It was only when she switched to a Program Manager role in the Product Design department at Hulu that everything clicked. Now she has great work/life balance, loves the people she works with and feels that everything has fallen into place. We spend way too much time thinking about what we want to do and not enough about who we want to do it with. One powerful way to assess whether a certain profession is right for you is to hang out with people who are doing it, then ask yourself: Do you feel you would get along? If a career is a good fit, you will find you have a certain affinity with others in that same career. So next time you go to a networking event or meet new people, see if you notice a trend. Mok found happiness in her career once she stopped crafting her identity around her job and found work that allowed her to live her  life. Now, work is part of her life, but it doesn’t define it.  She teaches yoga, climbs and has a lot of other hobbies. Are you unable to choose your next career because you are too wrapped up in how it defines you a person? Try taking a holistic view of what makes you happy besides work, and how your ideal job would help accommodate that. I invited Klein to join me on the panel months ago. She is an amazing entrepreneur , changed careers multiple times, won the Launch Hackathon 2016 with an all-woman team, and went on to get VC funding for her startup Betagig. Amazing, right? But a week before the panel, she announced that Betagig folded. I have to confess, for a moment I wondered whether to cancel her appearance. And then I realized I had just fallen into the very real trap of people who only tell stories of hardships when  there is a happy ending . What a bunch of BS! With Repurpose Your Purpose,  I want to have real and authentic discussions about changing careers. As soon as I checked in with Nicki, I realized she was ready to move onto her next project. As someone who had changed careers before, she recognized that failure is part of the process - each time you put yourself out there, you learn new skills, overcome your own limitations, learn about yourself and the world and ultimately, get closer to whatever it is you’re meant to do. Nicki’s story turned out to be among the most valuable of the evening, as people felt inspired and encouraged to take risks. By the way, this story ends up having a great happy ending after all… just recently, Nicki announced she landed the role of Sr. Technical Product Manager at Amazon Web Services. You might fail in one career or project you embarked on, but have faith that all you learn in the process will lead you to a new and often unexpected path. It seems counterintuitive, but each panelist mentioned that failing gave them the courage to continue. The more they failed and learned from it, the less scared they were the next time around, and the more they learned how to handle new challenges while building confidence . So if you are afraid of failure, remember that there is no way around it - only through it! Barcelo went back to school to sharpen his film skills and found a lot of confidence and success in doing so. He described it as “building a new toolset to handle new challenges.” Marble did the exact opposite - he dropped out of college early on and learned by doing. The choice is yours, and a lot will depend on the career you pursue and your personality . You don’t have to be young, childless, wealthy and single to change careers. Barcelo shared how having a wife and children to support motivated him to push forward and finally make better choices. Marble started on his journey as an entrepreneur with a wife, two kids, a mortgage and no savings. It took him five years to build a financially successful business, and he kept working at his day job until the income from the business was 85 percent of his salary. When he finally quit his job, he reminded himself that “if you have a career right now, you are likely employable” - and worst case scenario, he could always get another job within his same field. Aurora Meneghello is a Los Angeles-based career coach and the founder of   Repurpose Your Purpose . You can find details  and reserve your spot for her next panel discussion on changing careers   here .

How to Prepare Your Personal Brand for a Job Search

How to Prepare Your Personal Brand for a Job Search How to Prepare Your Personal Brand for a Job Search Youve likely seen the term personal branding in blogs and articles as youve been preparing for your job search, but you may not be entirely certain what it means. Personal branding is how a candidate packages their skills, background, experience, and public persona in order to market themselves to potential employers. A strong personal brand image could mean landing the job of your dreams, while a poorly maintained one  could hurt your chances â€" or even worse, get you disqualified from consideration entirely. Because finding and keeping a job is all about marketing yourself properly, its a good idea to  take a minute to read up on a few  key points regarding how to  boost your personal brand: Clean Out Your Closet â€" Your Social Media Closet The first place employers look after theyve seen your resume is  your social media presence.  In fact, a recent survey from CareerBuilder found that 60 percent of employers research candidates on social networking sites. Thats an 8 percent increase from last years survey. Companies want to know that theyre hiring people with character and integrity, so you want to make sure that everything you post on the Internet casts a positive light on yourself. Employers also pay attention to the ways in which your social media activity reflects poorly on you. Your conduct on the Internet can have some serious negative consequences on your job search: In CareerBuilders survey, 49 percent of the hiring managers who said they screen candidates on social media also said theyve found information in their research that has led them to decide not to hire a candidate. Some of the content that most commonly causes hiring managers to shy away from a candidate includes: - Provocative or inappropriate photographs, videos, or information â€" 46 percent of hiring managers said theyve not hired a candidate after finding these things on their social media accounts -  Information about a candidate drinking or using drugs â€" 43 percent -  Discriminatory comments related to race, religion, gender, etc. â€" 33 percent - Candidate bad-mouthed previous company or fellow employee â€" 31 percent - Poor communication skills â€" 29 percent This is not to say that  you cant go out with your friends and have a good time when youre in the middle of a job hunt. Rather, you simply need to be cognizant of the moments you choose to document and share. Build Up Your Online Presence The flip side to cleaning up your online presence is that you also want to  ensure  the content the remains reinforces a positive and professional perception of you. You need to  take control of your Internet  footprint and reshape the information that can be found  about you. One of the first things I advise any client to do is update their  LinkedIn profile so that it is 100 percent accurate and portrays them as a qualified professional. LinkedIn is well indexed by Google, so when a recruiter searches your name online, your LinkedIn profile is likely to be one of the first results they see. LinkedIn is also a great way to showcase  projects youve worked on, papers youve published, and  interviews in which youve been quoted. If you like to write or have an online portfolio to show off, its a good idea to purchase your own website domain, such as JohnSmith.com. If you are unable to purchase your own domain, you can set up a site  for free on a platform like  WordPress. Just make sure that your full name is included in the URL â€" e.g., if you use WordPress, your URL should be JohnSmith.WordPress.com. No matter which approach you take, strive to always keep it professional. Your Behavior in the Real World Is Just as Important as Your Behavior Online Many companies see their employees as extensions of their businesses â€" even after hours. Again, this doesnt mean that you cant have a life. But if you want the job â€" or if you want to keep the one you have â€" you should be on your best behavior even outside of  the office. Do you remember many years ago when a woman drove across the country wearing a diaper and attempted to kidnap a U.S. Air Force captain? Do you remember her name? Probably not,  but you may remember where she worked. After all these years, one prominent  detail most people can recall about that strange event is that the woman worked for NASA. You likely wont do anything as serious as that, but the lesson stands:  Your actions outside of work can affect your employer. You dont want to do anything that would jeopardize its reputation â€" or your chances of landing a job in the future. A version of this article originally appeared on  ResumeSpice. Rebuilding a Construction Resume

Rebuilding a Construction Resume Rebuilding a Construction Resume Todd Barrick saved many failing construction projects in his 15+ years as a project superintendent. His new resume brings his turn-around ability front and center. The construction industry has been rattled by the recession. With an extensive background in fixing failing construction projects, senior project superintendent Todd Barrick has the right mix of construction-management and contracting knowledge to help companies put their projects back in the black.Barrick, however, was hobbled by a resume that covered too much ground, lacked context and failed to demonstrate his return on investment. His experience involves juggling various types of construction projects in a range of budgets and locations and managing the staff on a construction site - from day laborers to construction managers to the project-management team to the Department of Environmental Protection. It’s not easy to describe this kind of on-the-job knowhow in a resume that’s easy to scan.“Todd’s resume had so me of the dollars and metrics, but it also had things like ‘Able to keep sense of humor in a crisis,’ which is not exactly enough to differentiate him right now,” said professional resume writer Andrew Pearl, who works with Ladders. “He didn’t have enough context - the scope and skills of the projects detailed. Working in construction is different from working for Microsoft.“Todd needed to get his resume up to date with the language of decision makers,” Pearl said. “In construction, the project superintendent is making a lot of decisions that mitigate risk and avoid the whole job from going awry. These are not necessarily as easy to quantify as say, the project manager who can say, ‘Project completed in X days’… (but) preventing a negative thing from happening is a positive skill to exploit.”Which is exactly what Pearl did after Barrick worked on the detailed questionnaire provided by Ladders.Same title, but varied rolesAnother key difference in a constructi on resume is that many careers in the field comprise a variety of projects, not a smooth, linear progression from job to job. For the past 15 years, Barrick had worked as a project superintendent in different companies. While the title remained consistent, the challenges varied a great deal; to dramatize that fact, Pearl drew out the details of each project and described how Barrick avoided costly decisions and made smart ones that ended in real business savings.Pearl used bullets sparingly to highlight the key results-centric information. The goal, Pearl said, is not to make too much of a feast of any single position. Here’s an example from Barrick’s new resume:Project SuperintendentTook over troubled commercial project that had fallen behind schedule, encompassing 2 separate shell restaurant buildings, 2-story office/restaurant building, elevators, and majority of tenant improvements. Spearheaded completion of remaining site grading, underground utility installations, concrete hardscaping, asphalt paving, and all landscaping. Turned around $6M commercial project, resolving all challenges left by 5 prior superintendents to successfully pass inspections and complete project. Pearl lists a job title, then provides specific context of that project’s challenges, scope, specific site information and how it was resolved. He also included the cost of the project and how many other superintendents had already failed to resolve the job.Highlighting turn-around abilityWhile the resume goes back only 15 years, it alludes to other contracting experience Barrick has had without aging him in the process.“When I did the free resume critique with Ladders, they wrote to me, ‘I hope I don’t offend you, but here’s the truth,” Barrick said. “I appreciate straight-shooting, so they let me know that my resume had about 12 seconds to capture someone’s attention, and it wasn’t cutting it…. But the new resume captured me right off the bat. I read it like a hiring manager, and I was impressed.”One of the first things the new resume says is “Demonstrated track record of turning around failing projects.”Barrick said he likes how that distinction separates him from pure construction managers, who may not have the experience to salvage a troubled project.“The most important thing in this case is to show exactly what Todd has done,” Pearl said. “Show the size, cost, length of time, how he eliminated risk or smoothed out a process… This is what will pop in the hiring manager’s mind.”
